Liquefied petroleum gas is a mixture of propane and butane, usually accompanied by a small amount of propylene and butenes. A strong odorant, ethyl alcohol, was added to the liquefied petroleum gas so that the leakage of the liquefied petroleum gas could be easily detected. Liquefied petroleum gas is produced when crude oil is refined, or gas that is volatilized from the oil or natural gas extraction process.
LPG will be liquefied at room temperature and 6 atmospheres, so it can be loaded into a pressure cylinder. Usually LPG is only 85% of the capacity, which leaves room for the expansion of the gas when the cylinder is heated. The liquefied petroleum gas expansion ratio is about 250:1.
Liquefied petroleum gas was first produced by Dr. Walter Snelling in 1910 and the first commercial product appeared in 1912. Liquefied petroleum gas now provides 3% of U.S. energy consumption.
